Multifocal Lenses (IOL) for Cataracts

Over three million cataract procedures are performed every year in the U.S. Many patients have to depend on reading glasses, computer glasses, or another type of eyewear after their surgery. Multifocal lenses are changing all of that.

These innovative, multifocal lenses restore cataract-impaired vision and deliver an outstanding range of vision - correcting for nearsightedness, farsightedness and presbyopia all at once. With multifocal lenses, patients are free to live a full, active life without the need for glasses.

Frequently Asked Question

What Is a Multifocal lens?

A Multifocal lens is an intraocular lens (IOL) that is implanted into the eye during cataract surgery. This artificial lens replaces the cloudy, natural lens which is called a cataract. There are many types of multifocal lenses each with unique properties.

What Are Multifocal Lenses?

Multifocal lenses provide three levels of vision simultaneously:

  • Near vision (reading)
  • Intermediate vision (computer work)
  • Distance vision

What Are The Benefits of Multifocal Lenses?

The vast majority of patients who choose a multifocal lens do not need to wear glasses full time after surgery.   There is a freedom to doing your daily activities without using glasses like cooking, shopping, lawn work etc.

Multifocal lenses:

  • Greatly reduces the need for glasses
  • Designed for active lifestyles
  • Provides clear vision in a range of lighting conditions
  • Corrects vision at all distances
  • Very high rate of patient satisfaction

How Is the Lens Implanted?

First, a topical anesthetic is applied to numb the eye area. A very small incision is made in the eye, and a tiny instrument (no bigger than the tip of a pen) is inserted in the opening to remove the cataract. The multifocal lens is then implanted into the eye. The surgery itself takes about 10 minutes.
